INNOVATIVE ONLINE METERING (IOM) - AMI SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE


IOM Smart Meters are all fitted with a quad band GPRS modem and SIM card operating on 800/ 900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies through a GDSP APN connection that can operate on multiple network tiers (example Vodacom and MTN and more) through a single SIM card and modem-to-modem (M2M) technology. This provides the optimum and most reliable form of communication since it does not rely on secondary PLC or RF technology or power quality to operate. The communication protocol used has been patented and is extremely lightweight while operating at extremely low cost through 256-bit https encryption. Finally, no data concentrators are required since all IOM meters can easily communicate directly with the HES with complete control and monitoring overall IOM meters.

    Benevision IOM cloud-based online management system serves as a fully functional master control system or head end system (HES) and is hosted at the largest data centres in South Africa with extremely strict access polices, fire monitoring, redundant power supplies and operates across over fully redundant multiple servers. This configuration allows the elimination of concentrators with IOM meters being able to communicate directly the platform ready for large implementations. The Benevision platform can also be integrated to any existing vending and billing systems since it has various API's available. Finally, the platform can conduct it's functionalities in any b- format required. Users can be administrated with total control over the features that the system provides and user activity is logged to keep operators accountable for any actions taken. Reports for auditing purposes are also instantly available to ensure that the system operates completely transparently to eliminate any fraudulent activities.

    CONSUMER INFORMATIVE SERVICES

    Consumers can now stay completely informed through 6 methods without any keypads, pilot wires or power line carriers (PLC) namely:

  • USSD Menu - linked to mobile phones (multiple mobiles per home) for real time, up to date remaining credit, consumption information and other statistics. This method works like viewing remaining mobile airtime which most consumers are already familiar with and works on 99.9% of existing mobile devices.
  • IOM App - linked to IOM app, users can see much more detailed information about their meter status, consumption history, remaining credit, transaction information and much more from their mobile devices (phones or tablets) and from anywhere in the country.
  • SMS - consumers are automatically informed with three types of sms notifications:
    1. Consumption updates
    2. Low credit warnings and
    3. Token delivery updates that include the remaining credits on a meter
